Japan names new imperial era as ‘Reiwa’ –

·       ‘Reiwa’ will be the name for the era when Prince Naruhito succeeds his father Emperor Akhitio, whose abdiction on April 30 will end the 31-year ‘Heisei’ era (Since 1989).
·       While ‘Rei’ means “good” and “beautiful” as well as “order” or “command”, ‘Wa’ means “peace” or “harmony”.
·       Japan imported the imperial calendar system from China about 1,300 years ago.

Kotak Mahindra Bank to charge For UPI Use

·       Kotak Mahindra BANK (KOTAK) stated that it will charge customers for UPI transactions may started 1st of May 2019.
·       For each Kotak bank account, the first 30 UPI fund transfers will be free, after which a charge will be levied on all fund transfers for the bank account.
·       This will be applicable across all platforms, including PayTM, PhonePay, Google Pay or Truecaller Pay among others.

Sri Lankan Navy Commander visited India

·       Vice Admiral Piyal De Silva, Commander of the Sri Lanka Navy visited India from 30 March to 02 April 2019 on an official visit.
·       This is the first visited of the Admiral to India after taking over as commander, Sri Lanka Navy.
·       The aim of the visit was to consolidate bilateral naval relations between India and Sri Lanka as also to explore new avenues for naval cooperation.

AUSINDEX-19 set to begin –

·       The 3rd edition of AUSINDEX (Australia India Exercise) commenced at Visakhapatnam on 2nd April 2019.
·       The aim of the exercise is to strengthen the enhance mutual cooperation and interoperability between the IN and RAN.
·       The arrival of HMAS Canberra (L02), a Landing Helicopter Dock, the HMAS Collins, a conventional submarine plenishment oiler, was also seen.

India signed agreement with IAIARD –

·       India signed an agreement with National Bank for Agricultural and Rural Development Consultancy Services, NABCONS for setting up India-Africa Institute of Agriculture and Rural Development (IAIARD) in Malawi.
·       IAIARD will be a Pan-African Institute wherein trainees from Malawi and other African countries, will receive training to develop their capacity.

US approved sale of 24 helicopters –

·       The US approved the sale of 24 multi role MH-60 Romeo Seahawk helicopters to India at an estimated cost of 2.4billion US Dollars.
·       It is considered the world’s most advanced maritime helicopter.
·       The choppers will provide the Indian Defence forces with the capability to perform ant-surface and anti-submarine warfare missions.

Malaysia’s ex-PM went for trial –

·       Malaysia’s former Prime Minister Najib Razak went on trial on 3rd April 2019 over a multi-billion-dollar financial scandal.
·       He faced the first of seventh trials over his alleged involvement in the looting of sovereign wealth fund.
·       In the trial, Najib faced seven charges of corruption and money laundering over the alleged theft of some 10.3 million dollars.

Algeria President resigned –

·       Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika resigned after week of mass protests.
·       He was in power for 20 years and was under mounting pressure to step down since his decision to seek a fifth term.
·       Mr. Bouteflika was rarely being seen in public after suffering a stroke in 2013.

ISRO to launch defence satellite –

·       Starting May 2019, ISRO plants to send up at least eight earth observations (EO) satellites of varied hues and at the rate of almost one a month.
·       Communication satellite GSAT-32 is also in the offing to next year to replace GSAT-6A, which was launched in a failed launch and was meant to mainly serve the ground forces.

South Korea to launch 5G network –

·       South Korea launched a world’s first fully-fledged 5G mobile networks.
·       The superfast communications heralded by fifth-generation wireless technology will ultimately underpin everything from toasters to telephones; from electric cars to power grids.
·       It will bring smartphones near-instantaneous connectivity – 20 times faster than the existing 4G.
