India and Bangladesh to jointly produce
film –
·
India
and Bangladesh agreed to jointly produce the film based on the life and works
of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
·
The
movie will be directed by Shyam Benegal and the scriptwriter of the movie will
be Atul Tiwari.
·
Additionally,
Prasar Bharti decided to carry Bangladesh TV on DD Free platform and also to
waive carriage fees.
India e-elected observer to Artic
Council –
·
India
has been re-elected as an observer to inter-government forum Arctic Council.
·
The
Artic Council promotes cooperation, coordination and interaction among Artic
states on common issues.
·
India
has committed to do more contributions in the Artic Council.
2 Indians among 115 UN staff honoured
–
·
An
Indian Police officer Jitender Kumar and a consultant Shikha Garg are among 115
UN peacekeepers and staff honoured by UN for their sacrifice.
·
They
lost their lives in the service of peace between January 2018 and March 2019.
·
UN
Secretary General Antonio Guterres paid tribute to 115 peacekeepers from 43
nations, who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty at the solemn ceremony.
Piramal, Canadian fund set up
renewable trust –
·
Piramal
Enterprise Ltd. And Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPPIB) have entered
into a MoU to co-sponsor a renewable energy-focused Infrastructure Investment
Trust.
·
The
InvIT would seek to acquire upto 1.5-2GW of stable cash-generating renewable
assets on a hold-to-maturity basis.
·
Both
PEL and CPPIB will act as co-sponsors of the proposed InvIT and hold upto 75%
of the units.
Mastercard to invest $ 1 bn to
develop India –
·
Mastercard
will invest $1 billion in India over the next five years, with plans to make the
country a global technology node for its platform.
·
The
company has already invested $1 bn in the Indian Market in the last five years.
·
The
investment will help foster innovation and increase Masetercard’s
speed-to-market capabilities and value-added services.
Odisha’s wildlife sanctuaries ravaged
by Fani –
·
Cyclone
Fani, packing wind gusts of up to 240 kmph, rendered not only millions of
people homeless but also dealt a body blow to wildlife and forest resources in
the region.
·
On
May 3, the storm swept across several wildlife sanctuaries as it crossed the
Odisha coastline.
·
The
sanctuary has been reduced to a wasteland with hardly any tree left untouched by
Fani.
Odisha sought Rs, 7000 crore under
PMAY Scheme –
·
The
Odisha Sate Government demanded special allotment of Rs. 7,000 crore under the
Prime Minister Awas Yojana with 90:10 funding ratio.
·
Provision
of five-lakh disaster-resilient affordable houses which would acquire Rs. 7,000
crore was sought by the state.
·
Centre
will provide further assessment by an inter-ministerial Central team.
World Red Cross Day: 8 May –
·
World
Red Cross Day, also known as World Red
Cross and Red Crescent Day is observed every year on May 8.
·
It
is a gentle nod to all the volunteers who have made unparalleled contribution
to people in duress or need.

PR Ramachandran Menon was sworn in as Chief Justice of the Chhattisgarh High
Court.
·
Governor
Anandiben Patel administered him the oath of office and secrecy at function
here at Raj Bhawan.
·
He
was earlier a judge in the Kerala High Court.
2 reporters freed in Myanmar –
·
Two Reuters journalists jailed in Myanmar after
they were convicted of breaking the Officials Secrets Act walked free from prison
after more than 500 days behind bars.
·
Wa
Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo had been convicted in September and sentenced to seven years
in jail.
·
They
were released under a presidential amnesty for 6,520 prisoners.
SpaceX successfully launched cargo mission
–
·
SpaceX
successfully launched a Dragon spacecraft on a cargo mission for NASA to International
Space Station (ISS).
·
This
is SpaceX’s fifth launch of the year.
·
The
launch was rescheduled earlier due to some electrical problem on ISS.
·
It
was launched on a ‘Falcon9’ rocket, from Cape Canaveral in Florida. It is being
used for the first time.
India, US agree on preserving Afghan
gains –
·
India
and the US have agreed that the gains made in Afghanistan in the past 18 years
have must be preserved and consolidated.
·
During
Khalilzad’s talks in New Delhi, it was agreed that Afghanistan’s political
future is for Afghan’s to decide through an inclusive and legitimate process’.
·
India
has committed more than $3 billion to the reconstruction and rebuilding of
Afghanistan’s since 2001.
